Children’s folklore-ethnographical studio
“Amer-Imeri”
In 1991, Edisher Garakanidze along with his spouse, the linguist Nino Baghaturia founded the folklore-ethnographical studio “Amer-Imeri” for children. The main activity of the studio was based on the educational course “the study of the homeland,” specially created by Nino Baghaturia. The main purpose of this course is to bring up children as the harmonized people, who will love and dedicate their talents to the home country. This main goal is mostly implemented in the studio through the folk music. A special atmosphere in the studio helps children to get closer to the customs of ancestors: learn the traditional children games, authentic songs and dances, as well as the Georgian history and ethnography, mythology, folk literature, church chanting and the bible. Children also have a chance to participate in the excursions and long-term expeditions in the different regions of Georgia. These trips help children to liven up the theoretical knowledge gained at the studio. To summarize, the studio gives an opportunity to be involved in complex studies of the Georgian folk heritage.
As a result of the special educational methods, children from the studio can perform songs without conductors, freely, like children of their ages did centuries ago strolling from one village to another. Young performers also make their own studio folklore – improvised songs, games and puns.
“Amer-Imeri” arranges concerts both in Georgia and abroad too. The studio has various remarkable praises on its credit, for example: in 1994 specialists acclaimed “Amer-Imeri” as the best studio at the international festival in Germany, after this award the “Deutche Bank” started supporting the studio during several years. In 2002 with the invitation of BBC, the studio visited the Great Britain and participated in the “International Concert 2002”. These series of performing and lessons of a Georgian song were broadcasted by BBC TV and Radio channels.
With the blessing of his holiness and beatitude, the Patriarch of Georgia Illia II, from 2007 “Amer-Imeri” has become the co-existing children’s studio at the church of the St. Apostle Andréa (the Blue Monastery, the Senior Priest David Sharashenidze).
